A soldering iron is a handy little tool to have that has many useful purposes. Some of the uses are metalwork, arts and crafts, home improvements and car and engine repair. One of the most common uses for a soldering iron is soldering electrical wire when installing switches and electrical outlets.

handle:made of wood
soldering iron is composed of a heated metal tip and an insulated handle. Heating is often achieved electrically, by passing an electric current (supplied through an electrical cord or battery cables) through the resistive material of a heating element. Another heating method includes combustion of a suitable gas, which can either be delivered through a tank mounted on the iron (flameless), or through an external flame.

Less common uses include pyrography (burning designs into wood) and plastic welding.

Soldering operations can be performed with hand tools, one joint at a time, or en masse on a production line. Hand soldering is typically performed with a soldering iron, soldering gun, or a torch, or occasionally a hot-air pencil. Sheetmetal work was traditionally done with "soldering coppers" directly heated by a flame, with sufficient stored heat in the mass of the soldering copper to complete a joint; torches or electrically-heated soldering irons are more convenient. All soldered joints require the same elements of cleaning of the metal parts to be joined, fitting up the joint, heating the parts, applying flux, applying the filler, removing heat and holding the assembly still until the filler metal has completely solidified. Depending on the nature of flux material used, cleaning of the joints may be required after they have cooled.

Soldering refers to the process of melting metallic items together to join them. Typically, the only tools required for the job are the soldering iron and the solder itself. However, several soldering accessories are available that can help you execute specialty soldering tasks, such as working on a circuit board or copper jewelry which requires an iron with finer tip, or working on audio connectors which requires a wider tip. Other accessories are also available to make your soldering job easier or neater.

soldering iron parts:-

Inner Soldering Elements:-
Soldering irons have a tip that heats up. It is this heated tip that is applied to metal to make it easier to shape and mold, allowing the user to bend and move the material.

Soldering Bits:-
Most soldering irons will come with a small assortment of bits.

Solder Wire:-
Soldering wire is often applied with the soldering iron to establish a new connection, or re-establish an old one, between metal pieces.

Soldering Rod Handle:-
Every soldering iron must have a non-metal handle to protect your hand from the high levels of heat the tool generates.
Handles should be made of wood or another substance that does not easily conduct heat.

Soldering irons range in size and shape, sometimes even in the way they work. These hand-held tools are basically used to heat up metal and be applied to precise, complex repair and rebuilding work. They are commonly used to work on electronics, including computers. Soldering irons are often used in the most complicated, exacting tasks...but that does not mean they are complicated, exacting tools. In fact, when you understand the parts that create a soldering iron, you will find out that this device is actually quite simple.

Soldering is the process of joining two metallic pieces into one

You only need a few basic tools to begin soldering

1-solder
It is a mix of 60 percent tin and 40 percent lead with a rosin core

2-soldering iron
A soldering iron heats both components so the solder flows between them and forges a connection

3-Clamps
This keeps your hands free for applying the solder and heat

Cleaning all components, circuit boards, tools, and materials to be used for the soldering process.
Selecting the flux.
Determining the heat to be used and the length of time to do the job, which are based on the thermal mass of the parts to be connected.
Selecting the solder.
Choosing the flux remover.

Ask an experienced soldering technician, "What is the most important task to perform before soldering?" Many technicians, even those who have been soldering for years, will probably answer, "heat," "iron tip," "solder." They usually miss the most critical task of all: cleaning.

Clean the soldering iron tip, component lead or wire, the item that the component is being soldered to (board or terminal), tools being used to form the wires/leads, and even the solder itself.

parts of soldering iron :
1-tip.
2-grounding spring.
3-nipple.
4-tip enclosure.
5-heating element.
6-terminal board.
7-handle.
8-cord bushing.
9-handle cover.
10-cord assembly.

The higher the temperature, the lower the tip life1. This has been known for a long time, and quantified in many
books, articles, dissertations and publications. Higher temperatures reduce tip life because:
1. Higher temperatures increase the probability of oxidation and chemical corrosion of the tips.
2. Hotter fluxes are more chemically active.
